Bridgers, that's exactly te scenario CabChap is targeting! We enable passengers to 1.) book via mobile, 2.) filter for rated cabbies 3.) estimate the fare and trip length and finally 4.) pay via CabChap in the not to distant future.
Would be interested to hear from you what you think. Currently we are in beta, just started last week.

in the last days I started to document my trips using the www.OnTheRoad.to server, which even has an application for my favourite iPhone. It really can handle a lot of things, I really recommend to have a look at it.
iPhone app is on www.ontheroad.to/iphone

Congratulation for the writing style: very entertaining!!
I agree with you: iTravel wouldn't have helped you a lot, in such circumstancies. But it could have helped your 17 year old hoodie (yeah, I have improved my vocabulary in English!!) to find his way and spared you from "hoodiesitting" tasks!!

Do I hear someone stepping into my cave? I am often guilty of stepping onto the soapbox and having a rant. As someone who lives in New Zealand, most of the time I really like the ACC system. I have been able to cover a number of sporting injuries including a broken wrist last year from playing hacky tennis i a concrete carpark. ACC covers costs and does its best to provide support and rehabilitation after an injury. You wouldn't be able to live on an ACC benefit (above the poverty line) if you were off work, so some form of insurance is still important, but the system does work. Id di go broke a few years ago and had to be propped up, but employers pay a government levy to support it. Some people get annoyed when sports people use it a lot, but they love going to the matches or watching them put their bodies on the line on TV:)
The only area which has frustrated me occassionally (and I think the loophole may have changed recently) is when a prisoner got a payout after he broke his leg trying to escape from prison. We are very politically correct down here:)
I think one of the key problems comes down to politicians not wanting to think beyond their term in office. If they invest in the future, they spend their budget of today.
Btw, there are also places like the Auckland Sky Tower where you can jump standing up in a harness and are less likely to hurt your back or neck:)

Looking around, this:

http://www.nga.org/Files/pdf/0901TRANSPORTATIONFUNDING.PDF

seems to be the best indication so far of the recovery plan priorities for transport in the USA. It mentions:
- Demand management
- Congestion pricing
- Vehicle miles traveled fees
- Variable parking fees

...all of which would be most effectively accomplished through ITS-based solutions.

The most direct reference to ITS is for tolling:

"Tolling Technology Developments
... electronic toll collection (ETC) [systems]... have been proven to minimize crashes, reduce harmful emissions, save fuel, and decrease roadway delays.....Similar technology is used in congestion pricing strategies abroad. In London, for example...."

there's an application for your phone and that you can use online that allows you to book cabs, know your driver name, GPS coordinates, estimates, pay by phone, and get a receipt with your driver's name on it - called RideCharge. they are not global yet i don't think, but they're doing what you're looking for.

Nice blog Gary!

When combining real life (humourous) stories with actual project-work on ITS technology, I might just start reading blogs more often...and commenting on them!
